NDT builds China’s first compressed air + lithium battery combined energy storage plant

Through the smooth implementation of the project, it can provide innovative demonstration for large users to develop, open up "new energy +", large base construction and thermal power transformation implementation path, explore high-power and long-time energy storage solutions, promote the coupling technology of compressed air + lithium battery energy storage to complete the product stereotypes and standardisation, form commercial promotion and application, and promote the high quality development of the new energy storage industry of the State Power Investment Corporation.

On 20 July, the innovative demonstration project of compressed air + lithium battery combined grid-side shared energy storage power station in Tongwei County, Dingxi City, Gansu Province, which is invested and constructed by Xinjiang Energy and Chemical Industry and EPC general contracted by Shanghai Institute of Complete Engineering, held a groundbreaking ceremony in Tongwei County, Dingxi City, Gansu Province, and completed pouring of the first tank of concrete for the foundation of the bearing platform of the main plant.

The project is a key project of the National Energy Administration’s 2023 Rural Revitalisation Targeted Assistance and Counterpart Support, as well as an innovative demonstration project of the State Power Investment Corporation (SIPC) and a “two-star” emerging industry benchmarking project. The project has a total installed capacity of 100 MW/400 MWh, with a total investment of about 810 million yuan. The first phase of the project has an installed capacity of 50 MW/200 MWh, and adopts a combined compressed air+lithium battery energy storage scheme, in which the compressed air energy storage system has an installed capacity of 10 MW/110 MWh, and the lithium battery energy storage system has an installed capacity of 40 MW/90 MWh; the second phase of the project has an installed capacity of 50 MW/200 MWh. After the completion of the project can be fully involved in grid peak shifting, frequency regulation and other auxiliary services, while further amplifying the Dingxi area wind energy, photovoltaic resource advantages, is conducive to enhance the level of green power consumption and utilisation, and to promote new energy to the efficient replacement of fossil energy. The project’s annual power storage 51.45 million kWh, discharge 37.8 million kWh, according to the coal power unit standard coal conversion, is expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 28,000 tonnes per year, reduce sulphur dioxide emissions by 825 tonnes, reduce nitrogen oxide emissions by 485 tonnes, and is conducive to promoting the optimisation of the regional energy structure and improvement of the ecological environment.

The project has four major highlights:

01 The first domestic compressed air + lithium battery combined energy storage power station, providing long-time energy storage, rotating inertia, fast frequency regulation of the integrated grid auxiliary services. It not only gives play to the advantage of long-time energy storage, but also meets the requirements of frequency regulation response time and load up rate.

02 Adopting the compressed air energy storage technology with independent intellectual property rights developed by Shanghai Institute of Complete Engineering, the system process research and development of 100% autonomy, air compression, storage and heat exchange, air expansion and high-pressure gas storage and other non-compensated combustion of advanced adiabatic compressed air storage of the four major core equipment, the localisation rate reaches 100%.

03 Independently develop the coordinated control system of compressed air energy storage coupled with lithium battery, combine with the advantages of local new energy resources, break through the system control and scheduling technology of storage network synergy, and improve the flexible operation level and comprehensive operation effect of the combined energy storage system.

04 Adopting axial centrifugal combined compressor unit and wide-pressure variable operating condition air turbine design technology, the project solves the problem of pressure fluctuation and efficiency of gas storage reservoirs, and has the secondary and tertiary frequency regulation capability required for response dispatching, which will play an important role in energy supply maintenance.
