Bearing Selection for Medical Robots: From Load Path to Motion Experience

In surgical and rehabilitation robot systems, bearings do far more than merely reduce friction loss; they profoundly influence the overall motion quality of equipment. Bearings determine how smoothly joints start and stop, positioning accuracy, internal clearances under load, and long‑term stability after thousands of reciprocating direction reversals. For surgical robots, minor performance differences in bearings are directly transmitted to end‑effectors, affecting positioning and control performance. On rehabilitation robots and powered orthotic devices, bearing performance governs whether mechanical structures can naturally follow human movements. Excessive frictional resistance will make mechanisms feel heavy and sluggish, undermining human‑machine interaction experience.

Bearing selection for medical robots represents multi‑dimensional engineering trade‑offs. Decisions should not be based solely on basic dimensions such as inner and outer diameters. Bearings must be treated as integral components of the motion system, with comprehensive consideration of structural envelope, repetitive‑motion performance, load capacity, friction torque, contamination protection, lubrication schemes and subsequent maintenance requirements. Joints including base units, shoulder assemblies, wrist rotary mechanisms, instrument drives, linear slides and human‑robot interfaces operate under vastly different force conditions, calling for customized bearing solutions.

Each bearing configuration comes with its own application boundaries. High‑rigidity rotary bearings are preferred for main rotary joints, supporting combined radial, axial and overturning moments within compact envelopes. For joints requiring large through‑holes for cables and pipelines, thin‑section and four‑point‑contact bearings deliver compound‑load capacity with slim cross‑sections. Matched angular‑contact bearings suit servo transmission shafts and reducer outputs, enabling adjustment of shaft‑system rigidity and axial positioning accuracy via preload. For distal miniature mechanisms such as motors and encoders, miniature deep‑groove ball bearings deliver low friction, low noise and compact dimensions. Various linear guideways guarantee linear‑motion precision for carriages and positioning platforms, while spherical plain bearings accommodate angular misalignment in connecting‑rod structures.

Rigidity must be differentiated from load‑carrying capacity. Sufficient load rating does not guarantee acceptable deflection. Surgical joints prioritize rigidity because tiny joint offsets become amplified at tool tips. Rehabilitation joints must balance rigidity and friction: high preload improves stiffness yet introduces extra torque and impairs human‑machine usability. Preload, housing rigidity, assembly fits, sealing and lubrication all modify real‑world bearing behaviour. Catalog parameters serve only as reference, since actual performance is heavily shaped by assembly conditions.

Improper bearing selection rarely causes instantaneous catastrophic failure. Instead, performance degrades gradually: higher joint start‑up current, sticky direction reversal, rising noise, growing clearances and end‑effector positional drift. Such symptoms may stem not only from bearing hardware itself but also from inappropriate preload, housing deformation, lubrication degradation or contamination. Simply replacing bearings with identical‑size parts often fails to resolve root causes.

Well‑designed bearing arrangements enable smooth joint initiation, structural rigidity under load, crisp direction changes and consistent torque, easing compensation burdens on control systems. Before selection, engineers should clarify actual load paths, evaluate overturning moments, match sealing and lubrication to cleaning and sterilization conditions, and take equipment service and replacement costs into account. The precision of medical robots relies not only on sensors and algorithms; the mechanical foundation built by bearings is equally essential for safe and reliable operation.
